Alec Whittaker on "HP printer cartridges"

After my experience with a Hewitt Packard printer which, just months out of warranty, announced that it was out of ink and continued to insist it lacked ink no matter how many times I replaced the expensive cartridges, I swore that I would never buy another Hewitt Packard product.

At the local Staples store I printed a sample page from every printer available under the $200 price level. The quality of the Hewlett-Packard was so much better than any other that, quite reluctantly, I left with the HP 8600 which, of course, uses a totally different ink cartridge.

I am still angry with Hewlett-Packard for the approximately $80 worth of full but unusable 7160 ( 02 type cartridges) ink I have left over.

I thought I would bring them to the meeting on Monday and see if anyone would make me an offer. How's twenty bucks?

I've been trying to go paperless this year. I use a Jot stylus. For sketching and note taking I've been using Notability. Recently on a side project I happened to be using a pad of paper to take notes in a meeting and it occurred to me that the remaining difference between paper and any iPad app I've found is that I can't rest the heel of my hand anywhere anytime I want. Does anyone use an app that feels like paper in this regard?

(Other features I need: continuous scrolling - not locked into discrete printer-sized pages (as in PhatPad), able to mix keyboard text and sketching just like paper, able to sync to dropbox, and at least view, preferably edit, on Mac)

Alec,

As a follow up to your problem, it was determined that the preferences for the scanner app had become corrupted.

The preferences are probably installed in the ~/Library/Application Support or Library/Application Support folder. Delete the file. Then reinstall the software. (You might also log out & back in.) AppZapper likely missed uninstalling the preference file. It's usually pretty good at uninstalling apps, but the structure of the scanner app may not have identified the location of its preference file.

Another thing to try is with the mouse plugged directly into your MacBook without the external monitor or anything else plugged in. The mouse / app may work better without some other peripherals connected. It may not like having other things connected or disconnected while it's running. And maybe it's more stable with a version of OS X earlier than 10.7 (e.g. 10.6 or 10.5).

Thanks for presenting the demo Monday night.

Chips

I was supposed to be giving a demonstration at the next meeting of the Brookstone scanner mouse. Here is the e-mail that I have sent to customer service:

“I purchased my Brookstone scanner mouse approximately 3 weeks ago. I downloaded the Mac software, plugged in the mouse and everything worked perfectly.

My Mac is a PowerBook running OS X version 10.7.5 and is normally connected to an external monitor and a powered multi-USB into which the mouse was plugged.

Everything worked perfectly for several weeks until I had occasion to disconnect my Mac to use it as a laptop. When I again it connected it I had a notice that the mouse software had crashed. I noticed that the icon in the menu bar was no longer present. I tried a restart to no effect. I downloaded the software again and reinstalled it over the existing software. Again to no effect. I then trashed the mouse software, again downloaded it and reinstalled. Throughout these trials (done several times) I repeatedly received the notice that software had crashed. The menu icon never has reappeared.”

I had a long discussion with the Brookstone tech support during which I deleted the existing software using Appzapper again downloaded the driver software, reinstalled it and got exactly the same result.

I wonder if I could prevail on someone to download the driver software from Brookstone.com, install it on a laptop and let me try my mouse at the next meeting?

This was a really great product to which I was ready to give 5 stars–until it quit working.

Howdy all,

Long time no speaky! Looks like you guys have done really well with the site and the follow-on to the old list.

I'm looking for a 1.42GHz G4, but not to buy. I need it temporarily to test a PCI issue against a 1.42 that I'm not convinced is working correctly (I need a 1.42, not anything else, it's a mirror door). I'd need to borrow it for about a day, and am willing to travel to you to pick it up and return. I'm live in Durham but work in both Chapel Hill and Raleigh.
