I'm considering getting a used or refurbished Mac Pro (and tentatively considering an 8-core 2009 model) since the next Mac Pro update probably won't appear until late this year at the earliest, at least per an August 11 item on MacRumors.com. I know Apple sell refurbished machines and that there are various on-line vendors as well, but does anyone here have a particular recommendation? Are there any stores within a few hours' driving time? Thanks in advance for any advice!

APPLE refurbished machines come with a full warranty. Many others called refurbished come with a "seller" warranty. And as far as I know no one sells refurbished locally.
Sources for Apple refurbished include Apple, Expercom, SmallDog, etc... Supplies vary. Try some googling.

Local authorized retailers MIGHT have a demo model they'll sell at a discount. But understand that they are in the business of selling new stuff. So don't walk in and start talking in front of other customers about "got any demo units you'll make me a deal on" or similar. Be cool. Ask discretely.

Like David said, getting a refurb from Apple directly comes with a full warranty, AND you can purchase the two-year extended warranty, just like on a new machine. And from the online store, nothing over $50 is charged shipping.
Go to http://store.apple.com, and click on "refurbished Mac" on the bottom left-hand column.

Thanks, David and Smythe. I should have made it clear that I've already spent a lot of time looking at used and refurbished machines at various online stores, including Apple's (and I've of course looked at ResellerRatings). I was hoping someone here might be have experience with vendors other than Apple or happen to know of a one close enough that I could look at a machine before buying it. (Not all on-line stores make it clear where they're located. For all I know, there's one based here or in Charlotte.) Good point about warranties; it's nice to be able to get a machine serviced locally. Anyway, thanks again. I'll keep hunting.

As I mentioned, Expercom and SmallDog sell Apple refurbished machines. I've bought many from them over the years.
But no one is going to open up an Apple refurb for you as that would make it hard to sell to anyone else.
If you find a local vendor who has one "open" then it's is NOT an Apple refurb. I have bought some demo machines from local authorized vendors but that's about it.

David, thanks again. I appreciate your clarifying that you've had positive experience with Expercom and SmallDog. I suspect you're right about vendors not wanting to open a box to show an Apple-refurbished machine. What I had in mind was inspecting a used machine (and being able to simply pick it up rather than wait for delivery).
