TMUG List
From TMUGWiki
This email list is open to anyone but aimed at those interested in Macintosh computers. It primarily serves Mac users in the Triangle area of central North Carolina, but has users across the globe. It is a general discussion list for anything Mac related. Post a question. Offer a hint. Simple or esoteric -- you should get a response.

Posting to the TMUG List
To post a message, you may send an email to mailto:tmug-list@list.tmug.org from your email client.

This list is not moderated. But subscribers who misuse & abuse the list may be unsubscribed by the list administrators. The list is for you to make the most of it. Think different!
TMUG-list Subscription Notes & Hints
Questions & comments are occasionally voiced about use of the TMUG-list discussion list, including subscribing & managing your list membership. These notes will serve as reminders & help provide clarification.
- In order to post a message to the TMUG-list, you must be subscribed to the list with the email address from which you are sending the post. If you have multiple addys that you want to post from, each addy will need to be subscribed to TMUG-list. Mailman (the listserv app) will not know that Joe Schmoe with the addy of <joeschmoe@desertbird.com> is the same person with the addy of <jschmoe@tmug.org>. An alternative to multiple list subscriptions may be to set up your email client to use multiple accounts or personalities.
- There are 2 ways you may subscribe to TMUG-list.
- [1] Visit the TMUG-list info page <http://list.tmug.org/mailman/listinfo/tmug-list>, scroll down to Subscribing to TMUG-list & follow the directions: enter your email addy, your real name, pick a password, re-enter the password, choose whether you want list mail delivered as a digest (The default of "No" gets you each individual post to the list.), & click the "Subscribe" button. You will see a confirmation page that your subscription request has been received. Check your email to receive a confirmation message. Follow the instructions & either reply to the email, or click the enclosed link to go to the Confirm subscription request page, then click the "Subscribe to list TMUG-list" button. Check your email to receive a subscription confirmation which will include your TMUG-list auto-generated password. You may log into your membership page & change the password to one of your choice.
- [2] Send a subscription request email to the list from the addy you want to subscribe using the link <mailto:tmug-list-request@list.tmug.org?subject=subscribe>. Mailman will return a confirmatory email. Follow the instructions & either reply to the email, or click the enclosed link to go to the Confirm subscription request page, & click the "Subscribe to list TMUG-list" button. Check your email to receive a subscription confirmation which will include your TMUG-list auto-generated password. You may log into your membership page & change the password to one of your choice.
- Once subscribed to the list, you may post to the list by sending an email to <mailto:tmug-list@list.tmug.org>. Use common email etiquette. Be succinct. Clearly identify your topic in the subject of your email. Attachments are acceptable, up to a maximum total email size of 250 kb.
- Discussion is encouraged with the TMUG-list. But, email etiquette (netiquette) should be followed.
- It's often helpful to trim superfluous data from a reply, e.g. a repeating footer.
- If you want to post a new topic to the list, create a new email message addressed to <TMUG-list@list.tmug.org>. Do not reply to another message, delete the message body, & change the subject. Or worse, change the topic & keep the previous topic's subject. This "hijacking" breaks the current thread, & the discussion gets out of sync.
- Some people choose to insert their comments within a quoted reply. This can be helpful if the are several items referenced in a reply.
- If you subscribe to the list as a digest, edit the subject line of your reply to the topic of discussion rather than the default "Re: Contents of TMUG-list digest...". Delete the messages in the digest that are not pertinent to your reply.
- Google "email etiquette" for more discussions of email & `net etiquette.
- If Mailman returns a bounce message, there is a problem with the subscription of the addy from which the post is mailed. Perhaps the addy is not subscribed, the subscription is not confirmed, the subscription has been disabled due to excessive bounces, or some other reason. If you have a list subscription problem or other question, send an email to <mailto:tmug-list-owner@list.tmug.org>. Be sure to include detailed documentation of the problem.
- If you want to modify your subscription options, you may do so via the TMUG-list info page. Go to <http://list.tmug.org/mailman/listinfo/tmug-list>, scroll down to TMUG-list subscribers, enter your addy, & click the "Unsubscribe or edit options" button. [a] You may be taken to a TMUG-list list: member options for user <your addy> page. Enter your password & click the "Log in" button. [b] You will be logged in at the TMUG-list mailing list membership configuration for <your addy>, <your name> page, where you will see your subscription settings.
- Here you may change your subscription addy, real name (Please enter your name with your subscription.), list password, or have your password emailed to you. Click the appropriate button to enter the change.
- Scroll down to Your TMUG-list Subscription Options to make changes to your subscription. The settings here are optimized for most subscribers, but you may want to change delivery options.
- Under Mail delivery, select "Disabled" if you want to stay subscribed, but don't want mail delivered to you for a while (e.g. you're going on vacation). If you disable mail delivery, don't forget to re-enable it when you come back; it will not be automatically re-enabled.
